Liverpool appear to have reached an ‘agreement in principle’ for the signing of Crystal Palace’s esteemed centre-back Marc Guehi, who is reportedly eager to join the Anfield club, according to recent reports.
Following a triumphant Premier League campaign under Dutch manager Arne Slot, Liverpool’s board has entrusted him with ample resources in the current transfer window. The Reds have already completed significant acquisitions, including Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong, with goalkeeping reinforcements Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman also added to their ranks.
Simultaneously, Liverpool are engaging in a strategic squad reshuffle, parting ways with some of their established players. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Nat Phillips have departed, with Jarell Quansah on the brink of a move to Bayer Leverkusen, a club that supplied Wirtz and Frimpong, in a transaction worth approximately £35 million.
The funds from Quansah’s departure could facilitate Liverpool’s pursuit of Guehi, with Italian journalist Nicolo Schira revealing that the Reds have established an ‘agreement in principle’ with the England international defender.
Schira shared on social media platform X: “Exclusive – Agreement in principle between Marc #Guehi and #Liverpool for a contract until 2030. The centre-back is keen to join #LFC, and negotiations with #CrystalPalace are ongoing.”
Former Everton chairman Keith Wyness has echoed the sentiment, describing the potential transfer as a “no-brainer” for Liverpool, with Guehi seemingly motivated for the switch.
“It would be a no-brainer for them if they can secure his signature, and all indications from Marc Guehi’s camp suggest he is eager to make the move,” Wyness told Football Insider. “It’s a fantastic deal. Palace might also be inclined to sell, considering Guehi has just a year left on his contract. All parties could find satisfaction in the deal.”
Reflecting on the past, Wyness expressed confidence that Guehi could follow in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk, another successful centre-back recruitment by Liverpool: “When Virgil van Dijk arrived from Southampton, it was a sizeable investment, but one that paid off splendidly. If both he and Guehi stay fit, it would be tremendous for Liverpool. Although it pains me to admit, this seems like an excellent move for the Reds, and I believe it will materialise.”
