In a bold move set to further establish their dominance in the transfer market, Liverpool are reportedly closing in on a formidable fifth summer signing following the acquisition of AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez for a substantial £40 million. This latest addition is anticipated to be another sensational coup for the Reds.
With Kerkez’s arrival, Liverpool’s investment in this transfer window has surged to an impressive £170 million, underlining their status as the window’s biggest spenders. Kerkez will join the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Armin Pesci, complementing last season’s acquisitions of Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili under the stewardship of Arne Slot.
Slot, granted the liberty to mould his own squad after maximising the potential of the existing team to secure Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, is keen to make further additions despite the expectation of significant departures to balance the books.
Liverpool are actively seeking reinforcement in their attacking line, with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike as potential targets.
Meanwhile, reinforcing the defence also remains a priority. Recent reports indicate that personal terms with Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi are nearly finalised. With Guehi entering the final year of his contract, former Premier League CEO Keith Wyness has expressed that this deal is likely to proceed, describing it as a “frightening” prospect for rivals due to its potential impact.
In a conversation with Football Insider, Wyness stated, “Acquiring Guehi would be a straightforward decision for Liverpool, considering his inclination to join. Palace seem ready to capitalise on his remaining contract to secure funds.”
He added, “This scenario reminds me of the time Virgil van Dijk was brought from Southampton for a hefty sum, which proved to be a masterstroke. Guehi, alongside Van Dijk, could form a bedrock in defence, making Liverpool a daunting opposition.”
Should Guehi join, he may serve as a replacement for Ibrahima Konate, who is said to have rejected a new contract offer, with his current deal set to expire in 2026. Football finance expert Stefan Borson noted, “If chances arise to offload Konate, Liverpool are likely to entertain them. Progress in contract negotiations has been minimal, and they’d prefer not to lose him without compensation.”
He explained, “Despite Konate’s talent, concerns persist due to occasional errors. Liverpool’s robust position last season helped gloss over these, but that might not always be the case, especially on the European stage. If Guehi becomes available, it is an opportunity Liverpool will not ignore to bolster their starting lineup. Offers for Konate will be considered, though ideally, they’d like him to recommit before deciding on the starting roles.”
