Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his concerns over the recent training performances of young striker Marc Guiu, ahead of their upcoming clash against Sunderland. Despite initial frustrations, Maresca announced that Guiu is “ready to start” for the Blues.
Guiu, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona for a modest £5 million last year, was briefly on a loan spell at Premier League side Sunderland. However, after only three appearances, Chelsea opted to recall the budding talent before the transfer window closed.
Guiu made his season debut in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory against Liverpool earlier this month, following a period of sidelining. The 19-year-old then made a bench appearance against Nottingham Forest, played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s 5-1 Champions League thrashing of Ajax, where he found the back of the net.
Maresca was candid about Guiu’s situation, stating the young Spaniard was previously “not training well” enough to warrant selection prior to his return against Liverpool on 4 October.
“We had a chat with Marc two weeks ago,” Maresca disclosed during a Friday press conference. “I told him the way he was training I didn’t like and he needs to change. He did, and now he gets his chance.”
When probed about Guiu’s previous lack of motivation, Maresca said: “I don’t know. With young players, it’s a gradual process. But since our conversation, he’s been fantastic and is now working very hard.”
Addressing Guiu’s potential loan return to Sunderland in January, Maresca remarked, “Oh my god, we are in October. In football, things can change very quickly—players, managers, everyone. It’s hard to predict.”
In other Stamford Bridge news, young Brazilian talent Estevao is capturing attention for his impressive displays for both club and country this season. Maresca commended his integration, supported by experienced teammates Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro.
“As a club and staff, we are here to support all our young players, not just Estevao,” Maresca explained. “He is a special player who is passionate about football and enjoys every moment on the pitch.”
Estevao’s promising form, combined with Guiu’s recent resurgence, underscores Chelsea’s investment in nurturing youthful exuberance as they aim to dominate both domestic and European competitions.
