Chelsea’s inconsistency this season has prompted calls for a change between the sticks, with pundits and fans alike suggesting that Manchester City’s £31 million-rated goalkeeper, James Trafford, could be the answer. Under the stewardship of Enzo Maresca, Chelsea have shown glimpses of brilliance with commendable performances against the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal. However, these highs have been marred by setbacks such as their defeat to Leeds United and a draw against AFC Bournemouth.
The upcoming clash against Everton at Stamford Bridge is crucial, as a victory would see Chelsea thrust back into the Premier League’s top four. Yet, the Blues’ unpredictable form and fragile core cast doubt on their ability to compete for top honours in both domestic and continental competitions this season.
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes that signing James Trafford could bolster Chelsea’s goalkeeping department. “James Trafford for Chelsea? Nothing is out of bounds,” claimed Schwarzer in conversation with Joe Fortune.
He emphasised the necessity for Trafford to secure a club where he would be first-choice. “He’s got to find somewhere as number one and prove his worth,” remarked Schwarzer, who advised Trafford to ensure regular playtime, especially with World Cup considerations looming.
Schwarzer also voiced the need for Chelsea to reassess the position currently occupied by Robert Sanchez, despite acknowledging Sanchez’s “dramatic improvement” over the past six months.
“The issue with Sanchez is consistency at a top club,” noted Schwarzer. He referenced other top clubs, including Manchester United and Manchester City, who have invested in world-class keepers like Andre Onana and Gianluigi Donnarumma. “Sanchez has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly in the Club World Cup final, but his distribution and decision-making need refinement,” he continued.
Schwarzer’s comments come in the context of a Chelsea side aiming to build on their recent successes in secondary competitions such as the Conference League and the Club World Cup. Yet, if the Blues aspire to reclaim dominance in the Premier League and vie for the Champions League, acquiring a “top, top-class goalkeeper” like Trafford could be imperative.
