Chelsea have reportedly reignited their pursuit of an AC Milan standout, with new manager Liam Rosenior pinpointing a crucial ‘weak link’ in the squad that he is eager to strengthen as a ‘priority’.
Still yet to oversee his first match with the Blues, Rosenior watches Calum McFarlane call the shots as interim manager for a stalemate against Manchester City and a defeat to Fulham. His official debut at the helm is set for an FA Cup clash against Charlton Athletic.
Even before setting foot on the touchline for Chelsea, Rosenior has already strategised enhancements to his squad. Reports from the Spanish outlet Fichajes suggest that the new gaffer has his eyes firmly set on AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, having identified the goalkeeping department as the current squad’s ‘weakest link’.
Rosenior has made clear his intent to prioritise the acquisition of a dependable shot-stopper. However, despite this urgency, immediate changes might not be on the cards. Maignan’s contract status, expiring at season’s end, presents Chelsea with what is described as an ‘irresistible transfer opportunity’.
This situation may see the Blues bide their time until the season concludes to secure Maignan on a free, or potentially strike a cut-price deal now, as Milan faces a last opportunity this January to cash in on their asset.
Maignan has caught the attention of various Premier League clubs previously, with Manchester United notably eyeing him over the summer. Though he remained in Milan, reports suggested he’s ‘never been closer to leaving’ the Italian giants.
The likelihood of him extending his stay in Milan is dwindling, hinting at a summer move. While Maignan could negotiate a pre-contract agreement immediately, reports indicate Chelsea have yet to advance on this front.
Nevertheless, securing the keeper’s services shouldn’t be overly challenging for Chelsea. The report proposes Maignan is ‘keen to try his luck’ in the capital, and despite Milan’s resistance, the lure of the Premier League appears to be proving ‘irresistible’.
The project embarked upon by Rosenior at Stamford Bridge is said to promise Maignan a pivotal role in Chelsea’s hunt for silverware, aligning with Rosenior’s ambition for the club.
Rosenior has confidently declared, “No excuses about starting my job mid-season. I’m here to win. This project is about winning. It’s not about anything but trying to deliver trophies.”
