Tottenham Hotspur’s attempt to secure the services of Morgan Gibbs-White has encountered a significant setback, with reports suggesting that Nottingham Forest have commenced discussions to extend the midfielder’s contract.
The 25-year-old appeared set for a move to North London after Spurs reportedly triggered his £60 million release clause. However, the transfer has come to a halt, correlating with Forest’s contemplation of legal action against Tottenham for an alleged illicit approach for Gibbs-White.
Originally signed by Nottingham Forest from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2022, Gibbs-White still has two years remaining on his current contract at the City Ground. Yet, according to The Athletic, Forest are now eager to secure his long-term future with a new deal.
Having joined Forest for £25 million following their promotion to the Premier League, Gibbs-White proved pivotal in the team’s historic qualification for European football for the first time since 1996. The midfielder contributed seven goals and eight assists in 34 league appearances, attracting attention from Manchester City earlier in the summer. However, Pep Guardiola’s side ultimately decided to pursue other targets.
Spurs’ new head coach, Thomas Frank, recently refrained from commenting on the pursuit of Gibbs-White, stating, “I will not speak about players who are not mine. I think I have two exceptions and they are getting older – (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Lionel) Messi. The rest I will just speak about the players who are inside Tottenham.”
