Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and his team face an unexpected hurdle in their transfer window strategy as rivals Chelsea are reportedly making moves to intercept their pursuit of a key target.
The Gunners, who have already been active this summer, are on the verge of completing an impressive roster of acquisitions, having spent approximately £75m to bring in Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Christian Norgaard. With the potential additions of Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke, and Cristhian Mosquera imminent, Arsenal’s total outlay could surpass £200m.
However, despite these promising developments, Arsenal’s ambition remains undeterred as they seek to bolster the squad further. Club expert Charles Watts disclosed that following the anticipated arrivals of Gyökeres, Madueke, and Mosquera, Arsenal will refocus their efforts on securing a left-sided attacking option. Eberechi Eze and Rodrygo are prominent on their shortlist.
Watts elaborated on the situation in his column for Caught Offside, indicating that while interest in Eberechi Eze is clear, Arsenal have only communicated with the player’s representatives thus far, with no direct talks with Crystal Palace. Similarly, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo is a potential target, with uncertainties surrounding his future at the Spanish giants.
Financial considerations may dictate proceedings, as stated by Watts: “Given Arsenal’s significant spending this summer, the club might need to balance the books before finalising their squad overhaul.”
Eze, an established England international with standout performances in the 2024/25 season, is a sought-after player. His contract with Crystal Palace includes a £68m release clause, with Arsenal vying for his signature against other European heavyweights, including Bayern Munich.
Yet, in a new twist, journalist Simon Phillips has revealed that Chelsea have entered the fray, having ‘held new talks’ with Eze’s agent about a potential move to Stamford Bridge, adding another layer of complexity to Arsenal’s transfer ambitions.
For the North London club, time will tell if they can secure their desired targets or if Chelsea will successfully intercept this critical deal.
