As Tottenham Hotspur enters a pivotal season following a narrow escape from relegation, Thomas Frank may be poised for an exciting upgrade up front with the potential acquisition of Manchester City’s Savinho.
After finishing 17th in the previous Premier League campaign, Spurs have been active in the transfer market, though critics argue they’ve not done enough. The situation has been exacerbated by the long-term injury to James Maddison and the departure of Son Heung-min, who bids farewell after a decade to join MLS side LAFC.
In light of these challenges, the possible arrival of the 21-year-old Savinho could bring a much-needed boost to the squad. Tottenham is reportedly in discussions with Manchester City regarding the transfer, with the Manchester Evening News suggesting a fee exceeding £50 million would be requisite for City to consider parting with the Brazilian talent. Savinho’s versatility as both a winger and an attacking midfielder could provide the ideal solution for the left flank, following Son’s exit.
Pep Guardiola has extolled Savinho’s potential on numerous occasions, commenting on his performance in last season’s Community Shield: “[He had a] good impact. He can play on both sides… really good at the crosses,” noted Guardiola. “He will help Erling [Haaland] to score goals. When you have ability to arrive in those positions and make a good cross… it’s your quality.”
After a notable match against Leicester, Guardiola was effusive in his praise once more, stating, “Savinho made an incredible performance again… He’s a guy who can play on both sides, today he finally scored a goal.” While acknowledging some inconsistencies due to his youth, Guardiola noted, “His work rate is impressive and he’s so aggressive on both sides.”
Pundit Micah Richards, following Savinho’s outstanding three-assist display in a 4-1 victory over West Ham, remarked on his competence: “His early crosses are what Erling Haaland has been yearning for, so he can go into the back post and wait for a wonderful delivery.”
Kevin De Bruyne echoed these sentiments, recognising Savinho’s burgeoning capabilities. “The talent is really there… he’s got exceptional quality,” the Belgian commented.
Savinho’s potential contributions to Spurs weren’t lost on Erling Haaland, either. After two assists from Savinho against Ipswich Town, Haaland remarked, “He’s been really good… you can already see the qualities he has. He’s going to be really good for us.”
With speculation surrounding Savinho’s move to Tottenham Hotspur, the North London club appears set to bolster their attacking options significantly, potentially alleviating the loss of Son Heung-min and setting a promising stage for the 2025/26 season.
