Jadon Sancho’s tenure at Manchester United may soon come to an end as Roma have reportedly lodged a bid for the English winger. The 25-year-old, who recently returned from a less than impressive loan spell at Chelsea, has been informed that he can depart Old Trafford. Serie A could become his new home after a bid was made on Thursday.
According to the BBC, Roma have indeed “made an offer” for Sancho, but the specifics of the bid remain undisclosed, leaving the outcome uncertain. Sancho was one of the quintet told this summer that he doesn’t feature in the club’s long-term plans, with only Marcus Rashford securing a move elsewhere thus far.
Roma, under the stewardship of Gian Piero Gasperini and ownership of The Friedkin Group (who also own Everton), hope to reignite the form Sancho once displayed in the Bundesliga. During his stint at Borussia Dortmund, Sancho amassed an impressive 50 goals and 64 assists over four seasons.
United’s initial acquisition of Sancho was prompted by his scintillating form in Germany, resulting in a £73 million deal in 2021 and a lucrative contract worth £250,000 per week for five years. However, a succession of Manchester United managers struggled to extract similar performances, leading to a publicised fallout with Erik ten Hag and subsequent exclusion from the squad.
A loan arrangement with Chelsea in August 2024 initially appeared promising but ended poorly, with the London club opting to pay a £5 million penalty rather than make the move permanent following Sancho’s return of five goals in 41 appearances.
Details of Roma’s offer remain scant, with possibilities including a loan with an obligation to purchase, akin to the Chelsea deal. Given that Sancho’s current contract at United expires next summer, a straight loan seems unlikely, as they risk losing the player for free next season. However, removing his salary from their books would be a financial relief.
Currently, United face additional player movement challenges, with Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrrell Malacia also vying for transfers. Garnacho has attracted interest from Chelsea, although their £30 million valuation falls £20 million short of United’s price. Meanwhile, Antony appears poised to push through a move to Real Betis as the transfer window draws to a close.
