Alexander Isak, the prominent Newcastle United striker, is rumoured to be on Liverpool’s radar, with speculation swirling about the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) involvement potentially easing a transfer deal. The Magpies’ star man, known for his remarkable talent on the pitch, has caught the keen eyes of clubs not just in the Premier League, but also across Europe and Saudi Arabia.
Last season, Isak demonstrated his prowess by netting 27 goals in 42 appearances for Newcastle, earning him a spot on Liverpool’s wishlist. The Reds have been busy this transfer window, investing nearly £200 million on players including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Freddie Woodman, and Armin Pecsi.
Despite these acquisitions, Liverpool are still in pursuit of a top-tier striker to step into the shoes of Darwin Nunez. They have expressed interest in both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt, with the latter seen as a more attainable target due to current circumstances.
Interestingly, Newcastle have also shown interest in Ekitike this summer. However, reports suggest the player favours a move to Anfield over a switch to St. James’ Park.
As the Reds prepare an upgraded bid for Ekitike, they keep a watchful eye on Isak’s position, anticipating a potential opening from Newcastle. Football finance expert Stefan Borson has weighed in on the situation, noting the “lunacy” inherent in such a deal with potential PIF involvement.
“If Liverpool could offload Nunez to a Saudi club for a sizable fee, say £150 million, it could pave the way for a move for Isak,” Borson told *Football Insider*. He highlighted the absurdity of a scenario where the PIF funds a deal indirectly benefiting their own club at Newcastle.
Potential connections between these transfers could attract scrutiny as Newcastle, a subsidiary of a Saudi entity, might appear to be engaging in interconnected deals with Liverpool. This complexity suggests that, at present, the most probable outcome is Isak remaining at Newcastle United.
