Manchester United are reportedly buoyant in their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, despite facing competition from Newcastle United. This summer, the Red Devils have already bolstered their ranks with the signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon. However, their quest for a prolific striker continues after the modest goal tallies of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee last season.
Although United initially hit a stumbling block over Mbeumo with Brentford, they eventually clinched a £71 million deal. Yet, with attempts to sign Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres falling through, United have found themselves needing to broaden their search amid financial constraints.
Sources from The Athletic suggest United have refined their shortlist, pinpointing Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins as prime targets. Previously, they had considered Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, but were deterred by the high fee. Talks regarding Sesko have progressed, aligning him as a preferred choice, while negotiations over Watkins remain convoluted, with Villa staunchly resisting his departure.
As detailed by ESPN, despite financial trepidations surrounding the high valuations of Sesko and Watkins, Manchester United are optimistic. The Red Devils believe Sesko favours a move to Old Trafford over Tyneside, hinting at a potential breakthrough if formal discussions commence with RB Leipzig.
In contrast, persuading Aston Villa to release Watkins at 29 years of age may require a delicate offer. United seem disinclined to match the £60 million bid proffered by Arsenal earlier this year, instead valuing the England international at approximately £45 million.
While pursuing their final pieces in the transfer puzzle, the Red Devils will need to navigate economic hurdles if they are to secure their favoured striker targets.
