A cloud hangs over Manchester City as a potential 60-point deduction emerges as a conceivable outcome if the club loses its Financial Fair Play (FFP) appeal. The Premier League giants are embroiled in a saga involving over 100 charges of alleged breaches of the league’s FFP regulations between 2019 and 2018.
Following a comprehensive four-year investigation, the club was referred to an independent commission but maintains its innocence. The verdict remains pending after the case against the Premier League concluded at the tail end of 2024. A guilty ruling could result in a significant fine, transfer ban, and/or points deduction.
Despite the looming uncertainty, Manchester City has continued operations as usual, and for many, there is a sense that they may emerge unscathed.
However, football finance expert Stefan Borson voiced a stark warning to Football Insider, indicating that if the outcome goes entirely against the club, expulsion from the Premier League is a possibility. Borson remarked, “My initial stance from the very beginning of this process was that should everything go against Manchester City, they will no longer be in the Premier League.”
He added that while the exact penalty—be it a 40-point, 60-point deduction, or otherwise—remains speculative, the seriousness of the allegations suggests the club may not be able to function within the top tier if found guilty.
Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive, Keith Wyness, has suggested to Football Insider that a 60-point deduction is ‘on the cards,’ although an appeal could potentially reduce this severe sanction. Wyness elaborated, “At this moment, it’s all conjecture. However, if found guilty, a 60-point penalty seems sensible. It might be an outcome that City could accept, but undoubtedly, there will be an appeal, possibly leading to a reduction.”
As City fans await further developments, the protracted saga continues to be a major talking point in the football world.
