Eintracht Frankfurt’s ambitious manager, Dino Toppmoller, has expressed his desire to eventually manage Manchester United, with current boss Ruben Amorim under increasing pressure at Old Trafford.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, Manchester United have found it difficult to reclaim their stature at the pinnacle of English football. The Red Devils faced a challenging campaign last season, finishing 15th in the Premier League under Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag early in the season.
This season, the club has shown inconsistency, registering two wins, one draw, and two losses in their opening five league fixtures. An unexpected exit from the League Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town has further increased the scrutiny on Amorim, as United strive for consistency in results and performances.
Reports have circulated suggesting United are making contingency plans, which include a three-man shortlist for potential managerial replacements. Frankfurt’s Toppmoller, formerly an assistant at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, has signalled his interest in taking the helm at United.
In a recent interview, Toppmoller remarked, “Basically, it’s a dream to be at Eintracht now. It’s simply a fantastic club. Here, as a teenager, I witnessed for the first time that my father was a Bundesliga coach. That naturally creates an emotional bond with a club.
“Thinking about abroad, I often played computer games as a child, always with one team: Manchester United. That would definitely be nice someday, because it’s an extraordinary club. When I was a teenager, Manchester United was, along with Real Madrid, the biggest club of all.”
Despite the troubles, former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has noted some progression at United this season, despite concerns over Amorim’s tenure lasting until the end of his contract in 2027. Murphy commented, “There’s actually been some positives for United to begin this season. There’s been some good bits. There’s been some progression.”
Meanwhile, journalist Ben Jacobs has shared insights suggesting that United are attempting to make their current situation work with Amorim, suggesting that alternative managerial candidates, like Oliver Glasner, have not yet been formally approached.
United’s fortunes over the coming games could greatly influence whether the club stands by Amorim or considers a new direction with names like Toppmoller potentially coming into the frame.
