Alejandro Garnacho is reportedly seeking an exit from Manchester United. Chelsea have now reached a decision regarding whether to lodge a formal bid for the winger this summer, after a prolonged period of speculation suggesting Stamford Bridge as a probable destination for the disenfranchised Manchester United star.
In the previous January transfer window, Chelsea and Serie A contenders Napoli expressed their interest in Garnacho, who was placed on the transfer list by United in a strategic move to generate funds. The proposed sale, which stood at a steep £70 million, fell through as neither club was willing to meet the valuation. However, a departure seems more probable in this summer window.
The young Argentine found himself further sidelined during the latter stages of the 2024/25 season and, after a notable rift with manager Ruben Amorim, was instructed to “seek a new club” following United’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Reports have now surfaced indicating that Garnacho’s valuation has decreased to £45 million, amidst links with a host of Premier League and European clubs. Nevertheless, his future remains unresolved as interested parties weigh their options.
Pertinently, The Telegraph reveals that Chelsea’s background checks on Garnacho returned favourably with “no concerns about his character.” This paves the way for Chelsea to contemplate an official bid, albeit hinging on two significant caveats.
The report illuminates that Chelsea are poised to table an offer for Garnacho ahead of the transfer deadline. However, the proposal is contingent upon United concluding their pursuit of a new striker, with Benjamin Sesko reportedly their prime target. Furthermore, Chelsea must offload or loan out existing forwards to accommodate Garnacho, with exits for Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja anticipated, alongside potential loan deals involving Marc Guiu and Tyrique George.
Additionally, The Athletic suggests that Chelsea may be prepared to engage United in a swap transaction for Garnacho. It remains conceivable that United could finance the acquisition of Sesko without needing to part with Hojlund, particularly if taxing fees are recovered from potential sales of Garnacho and Antony.
Manchester United could finalise the Sesko deal ahead of offloading players, provided it occurs before next year’s PSR deadline. Presently, Chelsea appear resolute on Garnacho, proposing exchanges involving surplus players such as Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku.
