Chelsea’s ambitious spree is under scrutiny as club legend Frank Leboeuf calls for a reassessment of their interest in Manchester United’s young winger, Alejandro Garnacho. The Blues, having already secured eight new talents, are still rumoured to be in the market for further reinforcements, with Garnacho among their potential targets.
Chelsea’s recent acquisitions include the likes of Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap, Estevao, Dario Essugo, Kendry Paez, and Mamadou Sarr. Despite these signings, the West London side is eyeing additional incomings, with a centre-back on their radar following Levi Colwill’s unfortunate long-term injury.
Reports suggest that Manchester United are seeking a fee ranging from £50m to £60m for Garnacho, while Chelsea are reluctant to exceed £30m for the promising winger. Leboeuf, however, is adamant that the club should exercise caution before making such an investment. In his view, emerging talent Jamie Gittens provides adequate competition for Garnacho, negating the need for a high-profile acquisition in that area. Speaking to ESPN, Leboeuf opined: “I don’t understand Chelsea’s interest in Garnacho. I saw Gittens for just 15 minutes, and he made an immediate impact every time he had the ball. Garnacho is undoubtedly talented, but is he worth £50 or £60 million when we already have options?”
The former Chelsea defender also expressed concerns about squad dynamics: “Overcrowding can create problems. A young dressing room can change rapidly one discontent player can disrupt harmony. While I’m not suggesting Garnacho would be that problem, too many players can lead to unrest.”
Meanwhile, developments in Chelsea’s own ranks are garnering significant attention. Paris Saint-Germain has reportedly tabled a British record offer worth approximately €150 million for Chelsea’s midfield maestro, Enzo Fernandez. The proposed deal reportedly comprises €125m in fixed payments and a further €25m in potential add-ons.
Under Luis Enrique’s direction, PSG is keen to integrate Fernandez, viewing him as pivotal to enhancing their midfield’s creativity and robustness. PSG is eager to seal the transfer imminently, identifying Fernandez as vital to their strategic restructuring. The record-breaking proposal, if successful, could herald a pivotal shift in PSG’s long-term sporting blueprint.
