Manchester City have decided that Brazilian winger Savinho will not be leaving the Etihad this season, dealing a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of bringing him to north London.
Savinho, 21, has been a name on Spurs’ radar as Thomas Frank looks to strengthen his forward options. The new manager has already overseen an impressive start to the Premier League campaign, with his side brushing aside Burnley 3-0 on opening weekend. Richarlison netted twice, while Brennan Johnson got off the mark after topping the club’s scoring charts last season.
Even with new arrival Mohammed Kudus dazzling supporters by setting up two goals on his league debut, Frank is keen to add another marquee attacker. Savinho has been seen as a player who could fit that bill.
Pep Guardiola was asked directly about the youngster last week and made his position clear. The City boss said any club interested in Savinho should speak to the club, before adding that the player remains in his long-term plans. Guardiola praised the winger’s potential, highlighting the more than 3,000 minutes he played last season and suggesting that while his decision-making can still improve, his talent is undeniable.
Guardiola did, however, acknowledge that a player’s own wishes can sometimes influence the final outcome of a transfer. For now, though, Savinho appears fully focused on his recovery after the manager confirmed he would miss the next few weeks with injury. The winger himself posted a gym update on Instagram, underlining his determination to return quickly.
Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has now underlined City’s stance, reporting that the club has firmly decided to keep Savinho. That ends speculation linking him with Tottenham and also closes the door on Real Madrid’s Rodrygo making a switch to Manchester, as any move would have depended on Savinho leaving.
For Spurs, attention may now turn towards Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze. Talks with Palace are believed to be ongoing and the England international is thought to be open to a move. Whether Tottenham can get a deal over the line before the window closes remains to be seen.
