Lionel Messi’s illustrious career might be drawing to a close, with former French international Emmanuel Petit suggesting the 2026 World Cup could mark Messi’s grand farewell. However, Inter Miami remain hopeful of securing a contract extension with the Argentine maestro.
Messi, the Barcelona legend, joined Inter Miami in 2023 but is nearing the conclusion of his current contract with the MLS side. At 38, both Messi and his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, are approaching the twilight of their footballing days. Ronaldo has opted to extend his tenure in Saudi Arabia with the ambition of reaching 1,000 career goals, but Messi’s path appears less certain.
Though whispers of potential moves range from a stint in Saudi Arabia alongside Ronaldo to a nostalgic return to Barcelona, Petit asserts that Messi’s European chapter has closed. He posits that the 2026 World Cup, taking place across the US, Canada, and Mexico, will be the ultimate curtain call for Messi.
“Messi could function in the number 10 role, but his lack of mobility is a concern for Barcelona’s midfield dynamics,” Petit suggested to Escapist Magazine. “A return to Barcelona is unlikely. I sincerely hope he reaches the 2026 World Cup; I believe that will be his swansong. A European loan before the tournament seems improbable given the special treatment he’s enjoyed in America.”
Despite Petit’s comments, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Inter Miami are “extremely confident” of persuading Messi to prolong his stay. Miami’s managing owner Jorge Mas expressed optimism about Messi’s future with the club, speaking to FDP Radio Miami: “The stars are aligning for something remarkable, both for our club and Lionel. Ultimately, the decision is his. We anticipate resolving this matter in 60-90 days. Our aim is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026.”
Since kicking off his professional career in October 2004 with a debut against Espanyol, Messi has amassed an incredible 46 team trophies and 56 individual accolades, including eight Ballons d’Or. As discussions continue, the football world keenly awaits Messi’s decision on his playing future.
