Viktor Gyokeres scored his first goals for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s side swept past Leeds with a dominant 5-0 win at the Emirates. The evening began with excitement as new £60 million signing Eberechi Eze was unveiled to the home supporters, creating a lively atmosphere before kick-off.
Arsenal struck early through Jurrien Timber, who rose highest to head in from a corner. The Dutch defender then turned provider, setting up Bukayo Saka to smash home the second just before half-time. However, Saka’s night ended on a sour note when he limped off injured during the second half, raising concerns for Arteta.
Gyokeres, signed for £64 million, made his mark after the break. The Swedish striker glided past defenders and finished low into the corner to score Arsenal’s third. Timber then added his second goal of the game with another powerful header from a set piece.
Arteta also introduced 15-year-old Max Dowman, who replaced Noni Madueke on his full debut. Dowman made an instant impression when he was brought down in the box by Anton Stach. Gyokeres converted the penalty with the final kick of the match, sealing a brace on a memorable night for both players.
At just 15 years and 234 days, Dowman became the second youngest Arsenal player in history, behind Ethan Nwaneri who debuted at 15 years and 181 days against Brentford in 2022.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, the game was not without setbacks for Arsenal. Captain Martin Odegaard was forced off injured in the first half during his 200th appearance for the club, compounding the concerns over Saka.
Leeds struggled to gain a foothold and were outclassed across the pitch. Their only real chance came when Pascal Struijk forced David Raya into a save with a close-range header, but otherwise the visitors offered little resistance.
The result underlined Arsenal’s attacking strength and showcased the impact of their new signings and young talents. Yet the injuries to key players left Arteta with mixed emotions after a night that combined promise, dominance, and fresh concerns.
