Manchester United players have reportedly attributed their recent 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United to a lack of competitive matches, expressing a desire to rectify the situation and improve under interim manager Michael Carrick. The setback at St. James’ Park marked Carrick’s first loss in charge, despite Newcastle going down to 10 men after Jacob Ramsey’s sending-off in the first half. Nonetheless, the Red Devils remain contenders for a top-four Premier League finish, though face fierce competition from Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
According to The Sun, United’s players regret letting Carrick down and believe that infrequent fixtures have impacted their performance. Their victory against Crystal Palace last weekend was also unconvincing, suggesting that a light schedule is hindering their rhythm, given their current absence from FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and European tournaments.
A source in The Sun revealed: “The players feel they let the manager down with their play. They believe the large gaps between matches are impairing their ability to perform consistently.”
In light of these concerns, the squad is determined to step up for Carrick. Yet, this comes amid revelations that club co-owners INEOS are reassessing their stance on appointing Carrick permanently. Initially considered a favourite for the permanent managerial role, recent updates from journalist Ben Jacobs suggest that Carrick is no longer the leading candidate. Jacobs commented on The United Stand, noting the consideration of Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann, and Roberto Martinez for the position. While Mauricio Pochettino and Kieran McKenna are still valued, they are not seen as frontrunners.
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has further reported that Julian Nagelsmann, currently managing the German national team, is interested in the role, adding another dimension to the managerial discussions at Old Trafford.
