In the wake of Mikel Merino’s unfortunate long-term injury, Arsenal are actively exploring their midfield options. Leading the charge, Mikel Arteta’s side have reportedly made an enquiry to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich regarding the availability of midfielder Leon Goretzka. The 30-year-old, as revealed by Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund, is set to depart the club at the end of the season, though a move to the Emirates during this transfer window remains unlikely.
This development comes amidst surprise rumours linking Arsenal with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. The Gunners seemingly considered a move for the Italian playmaker, albeit with complications. German journalist Florian Plettenberg noted the difficulty in orchestrating such a deal this late in the window, with Newcastle rejecting initial overtures and demanding a hefty £100m fee. Despite speculation, Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports confirmed Newcastle’s stance that Tonali is not for sale, an assertion backed by The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Whilst Arsenal’s enquiry regarding Goretzka continues, Arteta may lean towards internal solutions. Max Dowman, a promising talent within the squad, could see increased game time as the club carefully manages his development. Journalist Miguel Delaney shared insights suggesting such a strategy may well be Arteta’s preference, given Dowman’s potential to make an immediate impact.
In a presser ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final encounter against Chelsea, Arteta conveyed the club’s determination to find tactical solutions in response to Merino’s absence. Notably, Arteta also hinted at considering Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a temporary cover. The seasoned player, currently without a club, has been training with the Under-21s to maintain his fitness and could provide depth in Arsenal’s midfield as they navigate this critical period in their campaign.
