It appears Liverpool have tempered their interest in Wolves’ dynamic midfielder Joao Gomes, potentially paving the way for Manchester United to swoop in during the January transfer window, as per the latest reports.
Following a summer outlay exceeding £400 million on strengthening his squad, Arne Slot’s Reds have been battling inconsistency this season, languishing 14 points adrift of current Premier League leaders Arsenal. The Merseyside club bolstered their defence and attack significantly in the summer, but their midfield remains an area likely to see investment over the coming windows.
That said, it seems the Brazilian maestro Gomes won’t be a part of Liverpool’s immediate plans. According to a report from Caught Offside, their earlier enthusiasm has waned, despite initial scouting reports suggesting he possesses qualities well suited to the Premier League’s relentless pace.
While Liverpool’s interest has ostensibly cooled, Manchester United are reportedly evaluating their strategy regarding Gomes, considering a move either now or during the summer. The most feasible option for the Red Devils could be securing Gomes with an option or obligation to purchase in January, with a permanent transfer more likely following the season’s conclusion.
Meanwhile, Austria Vienna’s Ifeanyi Ndukwe is reportedly set to join the Reds, with Kurier (via Sport Witness) revealing that the Austrian side will receive a fee in the region of €7 million from Liverpool, while retaining the player immediately.
Despite a challenging start to the season, with Slot feeling the heat following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Burnley, he retains the unwavering support of the club’s hierarchy, as reported by The Athletic. Addressing the frustrations of the Liverpool faithful, Slot commented: “We’re Liverpool, and drawing at home to Burnley isn’t a result anyone should be content with. The frustration is shared by myself and the players alike.”
It’s evident that while Liverpool’s current concentration may not be on Gomes, Manchester United could very well capitalise on the opportunity should the conditions be right.
