Michael Carrick is reportedly willing to return to Manchester United as assistant manager to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, following discussions between Solskjaer and United higher-ups Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.
The shake-up at Old Trafford follows the recent dismissal of Ruben Amorim, who was relieved of his duties just as he was nearing the end of his first year at the helm. Although progress was visible with United climbing to sixth in the Premier League from a dismal 15th place last season, disagreements with the board and conflicting media narratives have cut Amorim’s tenure short. In the interim, Darren Fletcher has assumed managerial responsibilities, but former United stalwarts are poised to make a return.
Intriguingly, rumours circulate that Solskjaer might step in temporarily until the season concludes. Over the weekend, he was reportedly set to engage in crucial discussions with key decision-makers, Berrada and Wilcox. The outcome of those talks remains under wraps, but there’s notable chatter about Carrick potentially stepping in as his assistant.
Carrick, who managed Middlesbrough with modest success—though not enough to secure a Premier League return—before his departure in 2025, appears amenable to rejoining United in an assistant capacity under Solskjaer, assuming Solskjaer’s appointment proceeds.
Manchester United is eager to have the managerial situation resolved before the high-stakes derby against Manchester City on 17 January. However, Steve McManaman has voiced scepticism regarding both former United icons taking roles concurrently, suggesting it should be “either/or.”
This follows a report from Rob Dorsett, highlighting INEOS’s stance that both Solskjaer and Carrick are considered head managerial calibre, making a dual appointment unlikely. Nonetheless, the latest insights indicate a harmonious collaboration, with Carrick reportedly comfortable in a supporting role alongside Solskjaer.
Personal engagements have ostensibly delayed any announcements, leaving Fletcher in charge, notably for the FA Cup clash against Brighton.
