Liverpool icon Graeme Souness has labelled some Reds supporters as “muppets” for calling for the sacking of manager Arne Slot. According to Souness, these fans “don’t know what they’re on about” following the team’s recent struggles.
Slot, who led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his first season at Anfield, now finds his side ten points adrift from the top of the table after a thrilling 3-3 draw with Leeds United. With just four victories in their last 15 outings across all competitions, the Merseyside club appears to be in a precarious position.
Compounding Liverpool’s woes is the discord involving star forward Mohamed Salah, who has publicly criticised the club for “throwing him under the bus” and admits to having no rapport with Slot. This has only fuelled the call from some fans on social media for Slot’s dismissal, but Souness remains staunchly against these views.
The former Liverpool midfielder shared his thoughts on talkSPORT, questioning why Liverpool’s form has dipped since last season. He dismissed any notion that the new signings were to blame, instead challenging the current squad’s ability and commitment. According to Souness, “These players were good enough last year; it’s still within them. Simply blaming the manager is nonsensical.”
Souness urged the Liverpool faithful to rally behind Slot, asserting that “The manager hasn’t changed his approach; he’s doing the same things that won them the league last season. Fans should support him.”
Meanwhile, former goalkeeper Shay Given expressed sympathy towards Salah following a post-match rant: “I understand his frustration—he’s a player of immense talent. Slot should have engaged more directly with him.”
Given added, “In Salah’s situation, one can feel like a scapegoat.”
