In what can only be described as a bold move, Manchester United are reportedly making waves in the football world with a record-shattering offer for Real Madrid’s midfielder, Federico Valverde, as the January transfer window looms.
Following a summer of significant spending, which saw the Red Devils splurge over £200 million on reinforcing their squad, particularly in attack, the pursuit of a midfielder was the glaring omission. The arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko have been intended to rectify United’s position as the fifth-lowest scorers in the Premier League last season, yet the midfield void left many fans and pundits scratching their heads.
Despite attempts to land Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, United’s efforts fell short, much to the chagrin of their supporters. However, recent reports from Spain suggest that United are now eager to replicate their audacious capture of Casemiro, albeit somewhat controversial considering his mixed fortunes at Old Trafford, by tabling an eye-watering bid for Valverde.
United’s proposed package reportedly includes a fixed fee of €100 million, supplemented by €20 million in add-ons, totalling a massive €120 million (£105 million). Such a deal would eclipse United’s previous record signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus for £89 million in 2016. Furthermore, under the stewardship of INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Valverde is viewed as the cornerstone of a new project, asserting his place amongst the club’s most extravagant acquisitions.
As United poised themselves for transformation, questions about trimming their bloated wage bill persist. Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson expressed skepticism to Football Insider regarding the extent of any reductions. He noted, “Wage bills always come down slower than people think. United have already cut the wage bill quite aggressively.”
In light of these comments, the challenges of offloading players looms large, with notable names like Jadon Sancho and the potential retention of Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Harry Maguire. Adjustments may occur, but not with the swiftness or magnitude some anticipate.
