A recent acquisition for Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly disgruntled with his current situation at the club and has caught the eye of Serie A outfit, Roma, ahead of the January transfer window.
This past summer, Spurs bolstered their squad with a total of eight new signings. Among them, Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha have shone brightly, whereas others appear to have made less of an impression. In particular, Mathys Tel, who transitioned from a loan spell from Bayern Munich to a permanent signing close to £30 million, has seen limited impact on the pitch. He’s only started four matches across all competitions, finding the net twice in his 11 outings thus far.
As per reports from Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Tel is said to be ‘unhappy,’ in part due to his omission from Spurs’ Champions League roster, with newcomer Randal Kolo Muani being preferred instead. This situation could potentially work to the advantage of Roma’s manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, who’s reportedly placed the young Frenchman at the top of his wishlist to strengthen his left-wing options.
Although Tottenham currently shows no intention of selling Tel, a loan could prove beneficial for everyone involved. Yet, whether Spurs will entertain such a move remains uncertain. Tel might see more action as the season progresses, especially with injury concerns affecting the squad. Kudus is making a return from a knock, possibly alongside the long-absent Dominic Solanke, while Kolo Muani’s recent injury coupled with Dejan Kulusevski’s ongoing absence could pave the way for Tel’s increased involvement.
Given that Tottenham remain one of the Premier League’s highest-scoring sides, maintaining their attacking prowess would be pivotal. If their injury woes persist into the January transfer window, there’s a likelihood that Tel might not be released. Conversely, should Spurs’ attacking ranks return to full strength, an exit could be on the cards for Tel.
Reports further imply that Spurs are keen on acquiring a new left winger due to struggles in that area, which has seen multiple forwards filling the spot. Should they secure such a signing, Tel might be afforded the opportunity to gain valuable playing time elsewhere, particularly since he’s featured in that position previously this season.
