In the aftermath of England’s latest World Cup qualifier, head coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed his disapproval of Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence for an incident that transpired following Spurs’ recent defeat against Chelsea. Tuchel emphasised that the “standard of behaviour is always important” for national team players.
Spence, whose remarkable form for Spurs has seen him rejuvenate his club career and earn a spot in the England squad, was an unused substitute in England’s 2-0 victory over Serbia. Despite his impressive performances during the October international break, which have bolstered his prospects for the forthcoming World Cup, the versatile full-back was noted for an incident that left Tuchel unsettled.
The England boss was displeased with Spence’s conduct when the defender chose to ignore Spurs’ head coach, Thomas Frank, after Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea. “Yeah, I didn’t like it,” Tuchel commented regarding Spence’s behaviour. “Players are national team members beyond the 10-day camp; they represent the nation at all times, so maintaining high standards of behaviour is crucial.”
Spence may find himself back in the starting lineup for England in their concluding World Cup qualifier against Albania on Sunday. Meanwhile, Tuchel has revealed his intention to remind players of avoiding unnecessary actions, like emulating Cristiano Ronaldo, that could lead to sending-offs. “It’s important, and we’ll discuss it. No red cards please,” Tuchel stated.
Tuchel highlighted that England, having secured qualification, must avoid reckless decisions that could result in dismissals, particularly when in a last-man situation. He conveyed, “If there’s any doubt, it’s wiser not to commit the foul.”
With England poised to take on Albania, Tuchel is expected to make at least one alteration to his line-up, as he confirmed that Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa will not be risked due to a tight calf. “Ezri is not with us; he has a tight calf. We’ve assessed him and opted not to take the risk,” Tuchel confirmed. “Every other player is ready and available, and given his substantial workload with Aston Villa, Konsa was due a rest.”
