Recent reports suggest Manchester United are ‘monitoring’ an unexpected No.6 target as the Premier League behemoths prioritise reinforcing their midfield ranks. The Red Devils, who were prodigious in their summer spending by shelling out approximately £230 million, bolstered their forward line by acquiring Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha while securing Senne Lammens as their primary shot-stopper, replacing Andre Onana.
This transfer activity has given Man Utd a positive lift under the stewardship of head coach Ruben Amorim, positioning them within striking distance of Champions League qualification as they stand unbeaten in the league over the past five fixtures.
However, further enhancements are essential in upcoming transfer windows for United to mount a serious challenge for both the Premier League title and the Champions League in the ensuing years.
On the tactical front, United are evidently deficient in midfield, particularly in their required calibre for a top-tier No.6 to eventually succeed Casemiro. During the summer, United pursued Carlos Baleba; however, they were thwarted by Brighton’s hefty £100 million valuation following their summer splurge on Sesko, Mbeumo, Cunha, and Lammens. Nevertheless, Baleba’s name remains in the fray, alongside Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson as potential targets.
While Manchester United would favour a January acquisition of one of these prospects, their current clubs could present complications for any prospective transfer dealings.
According to The Daily Mail, United are ‘also monitoring Wolves’ Joao Gomes’ as a potential option should the aforementioned targets prove elusive. The Red Devils are intent on securing a new No.6 ahead of the World Cup to preclude any inflation of transfer fees due to standout performances at the tournament, making emerging talents with reasonable valuations particularly appealing.
Furthermore, Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher emerges as a viable candidate, with reports suggesting a January signing is not beyond the realms of possibility. Gallagher, content with life in Spain, has found starts sparse, making only four appearances in his 16 matches this term. United may opt to bring Gallagher in on loan, with a £45 million permanent move potentially on the horizon come summer.
A January deal would also pave the way for United to consider a move for Kobbie Mainoo, still keen on a loan spell after his bid to join Napoli last summer was denied.
