Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, has reportedly concluded that Jadon Sancho’s tenure at Old Trafford is “definitely up.” Despite being unbeaten in five Premier League matches, the Portuguese manager and United’s hierarchy appear ready to part ways with the winger. Sancho, who has endured a series of unsuccessful loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and most recently, Aston Villa, has struggled to find a permanent home since his 2021 move to the Red Devils. His substantial wage demands have proven a stumbling block in permanent transfer negotiations.
It’s understood that United are weighing the decision to activate a clause to cover Sancho’s wages for another year, hoping to secure a buyer next summer, versus allowing him to leave on a free transfer in 2026. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke suggests that the club is leaning towards the latter option. “They’ve upped the possibility of just cutting their losses on Sancho,” O’Rourke told Football Insider, acknowledging that the former Borussia Dortmund star is unlikely to factor into Amorim’s future plans.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has shed light on Crystal Palace’s efforts to retain highly-coveted midfielder Adam Wharton. Despite links to Manchester United and other top clubs, Romano reveals that Palace are keen to secure Wharton’s services with a new contract. According to Romano, “They’re speaking with his representative about extending his stay. Although Wharton had opportunities to leave last summer, Palace deem him untouchable, and he remains professional and content at Selhurst Park.”
Wharton, in a recent interview with The Athletic, has downplayed any concrete offers from Manchester United, remarking that rumours often circulate but mean little without firm interest. “You hear things on social media, but it doesn’t affect me,” Wharton commented, emphasising the importance of proving his worth on the pitch rather than indulging in speculation.
As the January transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Manchester United and their squad management under Amorim’s leadership.
