Amad Diallo, the electrifying Manchester United winger, found himself at the heart of controversy this week, as head coach Ruben Amorim faces a dilemma over his role in the squad. Despite United’s recent resurgence under Amorim’s guidance, Diallo’s dual capabilities on the pitch present a tactical puzzle that requires immediate attention.
Amorim’s strategic adjustments coupled with stellar performances from summer signings have propelled United into the thick of the Champions League conversation. With three successive victories over Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton, and a commendable 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, the Red Devils are charging up the Premier League table.
However, former Premier League centre-back Ashley Williams highlighted a significant issue on BBC’s Match of the Day, spotlighting Diallo’s dual role as both a blessing and a burden. The Ivorian scored a stunning equaliser at Forest, yet his adaptation to the right wing-back position exposes a defensive frailty far removed from his attacking prowess.
“He’s in the team because of his attacking qualities but he can’t fit into the two No.10 slots as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have made those roles their own,” remarked Williams. “So, where does he fit? He plays at right wing-back, often venturing into defensive territory, which isn’t his forte.”
Williams adds, “Diallo’s an honest lad, trying to cover his defensive duties, but that’s not where his quality lies. His strengths shine in the forward areas. Conceding possession while playing from a deep position only complicates his natural game.”
“The goal against Forest proved his attacking mettle, a scorcher of a strike,” Williams continued. “Yet, Ruben Amorim must solve this tactical riddle – shift Amad higher up the pitch with Leny Yoro offering quicker defensive cover.”
While Amad voiced his disappointment post-match, hinting at the squad’s dissatisfaction with the Forest result despite believing in Amorim’s system, the need for tactical fine-tuning remains clear. Diallo’s unique talents could yet be United’s secret weapon, provided Amorim finds the key to unlock his potential.
