Liverpool are contemplating a January swoop for Borussia Dortmund’s defensive stalwart, Nico Schlotterbeck, a move which could have significant repercussions across European football. The Reds’ “concrete” interest in the German international might just pave the way for several major transactions, including Marc Guehi’s dream move and a key acquisition for Bayern Munich.
The Merseyside club faced a significant setback on transfer deadline day when a proposed deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi collapsed. This disappointment was further compounded by summer signing Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury, along with Ibrahima Konate’s worrying form at the season’s outset. Guehi could become available on a free transfer next summer if he doesn’t renew with Palace, remaining on Liverpool’s radar. However, Barcelona are also monitoring the 25-year-old, as he waits to see if Real Madrid enter negotiations.
Real Madrid have shown interest in Konate, whose contract at Liverpool ends this season. His reluctance to extend his stay, especially given his recent performances, has cast doubt over a potential move, enhancing Guehi’s appeal as he continues to shine. Bayern Munich, also interested in Guehi, might consider a move for the Palace captain should Dayot Upamecano decline to sign a new deal, with his contract set to expire soon.
Liverpool’s potential acquisition of Schlotterbeck could simplify the situation for all parties involved. Schlotterbeck’s addition to Klopp’s squad in January might lead to Guehi joining Madrid and Upamecano staying put at Bayern. Renowned transfer expert Christian Falk highlights that these European titans are eyeing the same defensive trio, hinting at an elegant resolution with each club getting their preferred target.
Moreover, reports from BILD suggest that Schlotterbeck is hesitating over a contract extension with Dortmund, who are eager for him to commit until 2030, extending his current deal due to end in 2027. Schlotterbeck, however, might renew to bolster his financial leverage but desires to play for honours in the future.
Dortmund are keen for Schlotterbeck to finalize the extension but are willing to respect his decision-making process. “It’s his absolute right to plan his future wisely,” stated Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken, emphasizing the importance of perspective, trust, and conviction over salary alone. While Dortmund are not rushing, it’s clear that they wish to avoid indefinitely dragging the situation.
