Nottingham Forest are weighing up a move for Sean Dyche if Ange Postecoglou is shown the door, with the Australian’s position hanging by a thread after a nightmare start to life at the City Ground.
Postecoglou’s reign has turned sour fast. Seven games without a win have left the 60 year old fighting for survival, and last weekend’s limp 2–0 defeat at Newcastle was viewed by many inside the club as make or break. It now seems it may have broken him.
Sources close to Forest say Dyche is being seriously considered should the club decide a change is needed. The former Burnley and Everton boss has been out of work since January but remains a respected name among Premier League decision makers.
Dyche, 54, has kept his options open since leaving Goodison Park and was recently linked with the vacancy at Rangers. However, it is understood he has little appetite for a move north of the border and would be far more tempted by a return to English football with Forest.
A move to Nottingham would have a sentimental edge for Dyche, who began his playing days at the club as a youngster. He still lives within easy reach of the area and retains strong ties to several familiar faces around the City Ground.
Forest would also benefit from Dyche’s trusted backroom team. Ian Woan and Steve Stone, both adored by Forest supporters from their playing days, have long served alongside him as loyal lieutenants. Their potential return would add a dash of nostalgia to what could be a bold new chapter for the Reds.
Importantly, Dyche is available without compensation, a key detail that could sway the club’s decision. Having already paid off Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this season, the Forest hierarchy are wary of further financial strain if Postecoglou is dismissed. A free agent with proven Premier League experience might look like the safest bet in a time of turmoil.
Postecoglou’s arrival in September was greeted with optimism after his attacking approach at Tottenham, but patience has thinned rapidly. Performances have been flat, goals have dried up, and sections of the dressing room are said to be unconvinced by his methods.
For now, Postecoglou remains in charge, but his grip on the job is loosening by the day. The coming fixtures could decide his fate, yet Forest are already preparing for the worst.
If results fail to improve, the club’s decision makers may turn to a man renowned for grit, organisation and survival. Sean Dyche could soon be the one leading the charge at the City Ground once again.
