Tottenham Hotspur could find themselves replicating the INEOS acquisition of Manchester United, but only if one specific condition is met, according to recent insights. The North London club, a frequent subject of takeover speculation over the past year, is now seeing heightened rumours in the wake of former chief Daniel Levy’s abrupt departure.
Despite expressed interest from various potential buyers, the current owners of Spurs have steadfastly quashed takeover rumours. Football finance expert Stefan Borson, however, asserts that the club’s management is not merely playing games regarding their stance on ownership.
“It’s increasingly looking like they’re not bluffing,” Borson revealed to Football Insider. “Dismissing Rothschild’s as your advisor indicates a genuine lack of intent to sell, aligning with their public statements.”
Borson further commented on the visible presence of the Lewis family, suggesting their commitment to retaining ownership, despite the allure of a potential sale. “They’re conspicuously attending games both home and away, which suggests they genuinely don’t seek a buyer.”
Nonetheless, should the right circumstances arise, Borson envisions a scenario akin to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s participation at Manchester United, where a new minority shareholder might step in. “If someone could concoct a viable offer for Daniel Levy’s portion of ENIC, particularly given the apparent discord, something akin to a 25 per cent share could make sense,” Borson elaborated.
While the situation bears some resemblance to Manchester United’s recent dealings, Borson pointed out the differences in approach, suggesting the Lewis family remains unlikely to assume a passive stance similar to the Glazers. He did mention, however, the potential for a minority owner acquiring an initial 25 per cent stake, with ambitions to gradually increase their shareholding.
“If the Lewis family is resolute on not selling, the dynamic may become untenable for Daniel Levy and his kin to remain as minor stakeholders,” Borson concluded. “It’s a situation they may endeavour to navigate out of, perhaps opting to cash in.”
Further updates and insights on Tottenham’s future will be keenly observed, as football circles continue to speculate on the club’s next strategic move.
