Arsenal star William Saliba has put pen to paper on a new five year contract and declared he wants to become the best defender in the world under Mikel Arteta.
The Frenchman’s previous deal was due to run until 2027 but the Gunners have moved quickly to lock down one of their most prized assets amid whispers of Real Madrid circling.
Saliba, 24, says Arteta is the man to take him to the very top. “The boss is one of the best coaches in the world,” he said. “He and his staff have helped me so much. I am 24 now and I still have so many things to improve. I know they can help me become the best or at least one of the best defenders in the world and win trophies.”
The defender joined Arsenal from Saint Etienne in 2019 but had to wait his turn. Two loan spells back in France left him wondering if he would ever make the grade in north London. “When I did not play for six months and went on loan of course I had doubts. I thought maybe I would never play here. But I told myself I could not leave without playing for this club. I did not give up. I went out, I played games, I came back and now I play almost every match. I am proud of myself for never giving up.”
Since returning Saliba has become a cornerstone of Arteta’s side, racking up 105 league appearances and forming a rock solid partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes. His fellow centre back signed his own extension in June until 2029 and the pair now look set to anchor Arsenal’s defence for years to come.
Arteta has long stressed the importance of keeping his core together and this latest deal is a major statement of intent. Arsenal believe Saliba is central to their push for silverware and his new contract is being seen inside the club as a huge piece of business.
The Gunners have already tied down most of their biggest names on long term deals and the message is clear. This is a squad built to win now and built to win together. Bukayo Saka remains the final jewel still to extend but there is optimism he will follow suit.
Saliba’s commitment underlines the belief running through the squad. Arsenal have kept hold of one of the Premier League’s most dominant defenders and with Gabriel beside him they boast arguably the best partnership in the division.
For Saliba the aim is simple. To become the best in the world and to do it in Arsenal red.
