West Ham United are reportedly evaluating the possibility of appointing former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil, should they decide to part ways with current head coach Graham Potter. The Hammers have endured a disappointing start to their Premier League campaign, having lost three of their first four matches, and find themselves languishing in 18th position. This poor form unfortunately carries over from the previous season, placing Potter under considerable pressure.
While Nuno Espirito Santo, recently relieved of his duties at Nottingham Forest, appears to be the logical choice as a replacement for Potter, West Ham’s decision-making process is historically unpredictable and could result in a surprising or less conventional appointment.
Gary O’Neil, despite being considered an underwhelming choice by some, is one of the candidates prominently linked to the role should Potter be dismissed. His history with West Ham, having played 56 times and scored three goals, alongside providing seven assists during his playing career, might strengthen his case.
O’Neil’s managerial journey began at Bournemouth where he impressively led the club to a 15th-place finish, having taken over from Scott Parker. However, despite his success, Bournemouth chose to part ways with him, opting instead for Andoni Iraola, who has since excelled in the role. O’Neil then took the reins at Wolves, guiding them to a commendable 14th-place finish before being sacked when the club found themselves struggling in December 2023.
According to Independent Sport, O’Neil is viewed as a strong contender should West Ham decide to initiate a managerial search. His adeptness at navigating challenging situations at both Bournemouth and Wolves is highly esteemed within Premier League circles, and his ability to manage under pressure may suit the current challenges at West Ham.
This speculation places O’Neil amongst the likes of Nuno Espirito Santo, Brendan Rodgers, and Gareth Southgate as potential successors to Potter. As West Ham’s hierarchy weighs their options, the experienced O’Neil may yet again find an opportunity to stabilise another Premier League outfit in need.
