Jose Mourinho is back where it all began after being unveiled as Benfica’s new manager – and he could not resist taking a swipe at his former club Fenerbahce.
The 62-year-old coach has signed a two-year deal with the Lisbon giants, returning to the club he briefly led in 2000 before going on to conquer Europe with Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan.
Mourinho has been out of work since being axed by Fenerbahce last month after failing to guide them into the Champions League. At his first press conference in Lisbon he admitted the move to Turkey was a mistake.
“My career has been rich, I have coached in different countries. I made the wrong choice but I have no regrets. I gave everything until the last day. Coaching Benfica is returning to my level,” Mourinho said.
The Special One has already lit a fire under Benfica supporters by declaring they have the squad to win the league. “Promises are worth what they are worth. But I truly believe Benfica has everything it takes to win the championship. We have lost points and will lose more but we start from scratch. This team has the potential to be champions. It is not a promise, it is my conviction,” he said.
The club confirmed the deal in a statement to the Portuguese markets, revealing both sides could walk away after the 2025-26 season if they wished.
Mourinho was greeted like a hero on arrival at Lisbon airport with fans draping a Benfica scarf around his shoulders. He insisted his return is not about nostalgia. “When I was faced with the possibility I did not think twice. I am interested, I like it,” he said.
The timing is explosive. Benfica face Chelsea in the Champions League later this month, setting up a reunion between Mourinho and his former club at Stamford Bridge.
President Rui Costa hailed the appointment. “Mourinho needs no introduction. He is one of the greatest coaches in the world. It is a privilege to have him,” he said.
Benfica sit sixth in the league, five points behind Porto, and Mourinho takes charge this weekend against Vila das Aves.
