In what has been a challenging period for Manchester United, captain Bruno Fernandes has found himself at the centre of scrutiny, as pundits and former players question both his leadership and on-field demeanour. Despite his contributions being vital in sustaining a semblance of respectability for the storied club, Fernandes has faced criticism, notably from United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane.
The 2024/25 season saw Ruben Amorim’s United side finish a dismal 15th in the Premier League, compounded by a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. With no European fixtures to contend with this season, the Red Devils have had a rocky start, accruing just four points from their first three Premier League matches. Recently, they endured a shock exit from the League Cup, falling to League Two outfit Grimsby Town on penalties.
Fernandes, however, has been a consistent beacon with his goals and assists, earning praise from Neville and Keane for his technical prowess. Yet, the same legends have voiced concerns over his conduct as captain. After a heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in April, Keane labelled the team as “bluffers,” suggesting Fernandes offered little more than “soundbites.”
Keane candidly remarked, “To be fair to Bruno Fernandes, he fronts up but to me, it’s just soundbites now. There’s talk of belief and supporting teammates, yet when [Diogo] Dalot fails to put in a challenge, I hope Bruno is addressing it in the dressing room. Real teammates put demands on each other.”
Fernandes, in response, has expressed a willingness to embrace the varied opinions thrown his way but insists he refrains from judging others without personal knowledge of them.
Speaking to the BBC, Fernandes remarked, “People have an opinion about me based on what they see, be it on the pitch or through the screen, and I can’t change that. They have the freedom to think as they do about me, just as I have about them. But I never judge until I truly know someone.”
He continued, “Different opinions are what make life diverse and interesting. If we all thought the same, it would be dreadfully dull.”
With Fernandes at the helm, Manchester United are striving to regain their historic form and put recent adversities behind them, aware that the eyes of the footballing world remain ever-watchful.
