Erling Haaland has once again been surrounded by speculation regarding his future at Manchester City. Reports suggest that manager Pep Guardiola would not stand in the way should the prolific Norwegian striker choose to depart the Etihad Stadium next summer.
The Citizens experienced a rather subpar 2024/25 season by their recent standards, managing a late resurgence to secure a third-place finish and Champions League football. Despite bagging 22 Premier League goals, Haaland did not quite shine as brightly as in his stellar debut seasons, and a September injury to Rodri contributed significantly to their inability to clinch a fifth consecutive league title, with City trailing 13 points behind champions Liverpool.
Efforts to reinstate their dominance have seen City bolster their ranks with fresh talent over the last two transfer windows. However, the 2025/26 campaign has not started as planned, as they have only managed to capture three points from three matches. Spanish media are now suggesting Haaland might “reconsider his future” should the current season not align with his aspirations.
The speculation feeds into talk of Haaland attracting interest from Barcelona. Should Haaland feel his Premier League journey is nearing its end, Guardiola is reportedly willing to facilitate his departure, provided a suitable offer is tendered a figure likely to surpass €150 million, a sum conceivable for only a select few European titans.
Despite the off-field chatter, Haaland has been clear in urging his teammates to step up their game after a run of disappointing results. With two consecutive losses under their belt, Haaland has voiced his dissatisfaction with their outputs thus far, urging the squad to “get our a**es going” to bounce back.
Haaland was candid in expressing the need for revitalisation: “We’ve lost two games in a row, it’s not good enough. We have to sort it out and find ways to return to winning there are too many strong teams for us to get complacent.”
Their upcoming clash against United offers the perfect stage for a turnaround, Haaland believes: “There’s no better time to get back on track than against United. It’s a chance to channel our frustration into a positive performance on the pitch.”
Meanwhile, summer transfers saw rival Liverpool strengthen their front line with Alexander Isak. Nonetheless, Guardiola remains adamant Haaland is unmatched. When quizzed on the comparative prowess of Haaland and Isak, Guardiola praised both but underscored his admiration for Haaland: “Erling is the elite striker as good as they come.”
In the ongoing debates comparing football greats, Guardiola added: “Everyone’s entitled to their take some may prefer Mbappe, Messi or Cristiano. Yet, I wouldn’t trade Erling for anyone. His abilities on the pitch speak volumes, and he’s just as remarkable off it.”
