Manchester United, having undergone a significant squad transformation this summer following their dismal 15th-place finish and trophyless campaign in the 2024/25 season, have spent around £230 million on acquiring fresh talent.
This overhaul has seen the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Senne Lammens joining the ranks, while the club bid farewell to high-profile players such as Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho.
A key focus for the Red Devils was rejuvenating their attack, and there is considerable anticipation surrounding the £74 million arrival, Benjamin Sesko. After Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee faltered last season, the pressure mounts on Sesko to deliver. However, after struggling in his initial outings, it’s vital for the new acquisition to acclimate post-international break.
Club legend Nicky Butt expressed reservations, suggesting Manchester United might have avoided repeating past errors by opting for Aston Villa’s seasoned striker, Ollie Watkins, instead of Sesko. Butt noted, “A young player arriving with no Premier League experience feels like déjà vu.”
Reflecting on the transfer dealings, Butt commented, “I know Cunha has done well previously, but I’d have preferred an experienced striker. I hope I’m wrong, but history feels like it’s repeating with Sesko after Hojlund. A player like Watkins could have been instrumental in guiding younger strikers through rough patches.”
In addition to transfer matters, Butt highlighted an important “aim” for head coach Ruben Amorim: restoring Old Trafford’s lost aura. “Success this term might range from an FA Cup win to a top-four finish, but re-instilling belief at Old Trafford is crucial. Opponents shouldn’t relish visits to our fortress,” Butt stated.
He further elaborated that regaining the “fear factor” at home would mark substantial progress, even if they miss out on top honours. “Aiming for a top-six finish and reinstating that intimidating aura at Old Trafford is essential, making rivals wary of visiting once again.”
