Napoli are weighing up a move for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as part of ongoing discussions with the Premier League club.
Talks between the Serie A champions and United centre on a loan deal for Rasmus Hojlund that could include an obligation to buy depending on appearances. During negotiations Napoli are expected to ask about Mainoo’s availability as they look to strengthen further in midfield.
The Italian side are no strangers to business with United having already secured Scott McTominay last year. The Scotland international has been a revelation in Naples and was named Serie A Player of the Year last season. His early form this campaign has been just as impressive after scoring in the opening day win against Sassuolo from a role wide on the left.
Napoli also handed Kevin De Bruyne a debut in that fixture while Frank Anguissa and Stanislav Lobotka occupied central midfield roles and Billy Gilmour came off the bench. Such depth highlights the challenge Mainoo would face should he make the move but the 20 year old is believed to be eager to test himself in Europe.
Champions League football is another factor in Napoli’s favour. Mainoo is keen to feature at the highest level and Napoli can provide that stage while Roma are also monitoring developments but remain at a disadvantage.
United meanwhile are in no rush to sanction Mainoo’s departure. The youngster has struggled for minutes under Ruben Amorim and is yet to appear this season. Talks over a new contract have also stalled which has encouraged potential suitors.
Napoli see Mainoo as part of a longer term strategy to refresh their midfield but know any deal would require careful negotiation. United rate him highly despite his current lack of involvement and would only consider a move if they felt it served his development.
For now Napoli will raise his name during the Hojlund talks and gauge United’s stance. Should the opportunity arise Mainoo could become the third United player to swap Old Trafford for Naples in the space of twelve months.
