Manchester United’s initial attempt to secure Brighton’s midfield maestro, Carlos Baleba, through a player-plus-cash deal has been turned down. Brighton, undeterred, are seemingly bracing for his exit with a meticulously planned succession strategy in place.
Recent revelations indicated that United had approached Baleba’s camp via intermediaries, with manager Ruben Amorim identifying the 21-year-old as the ideal candidate to anchor his midfield. David Ornstein of The Athletic disclosed that although United has not been provided with an official valuation, Brighton envisions Baleba reaching similar heights as Moises Caicedo, their former player, who commanded a £115 million fee from Chelsea.
Ornstein stated, “Brighton’s preference is to retain Carlos Baleba until summer 2026. However, with Manchester United making enquiries, the club sees potential in Baleba akin to Moises Caicedo’s calibre when he departed for £115m.”
It appears Manchester City are also eyeing Baleba as a possible long-term replacement for Rodri. Meanwhile, reports from CaughtOffside indicate that Liverpool and Tottenham have joined the fray in pursuit of the promising Brighton talent.
According to insider X account indykaila, who initially broke the news of United’s interest, Baleba is eager to leave Brighton, having verbally expressed his desire to join the Red Devils. His agent has reportedly signalled approval for the terms proposed by United, pending Brighton’s acquiescence.
Further reports suggest United’s opening offer, incorporating young midfielder Toby Collyer as part of the deal, has been rebuffed by the Seagulls. Despite this, Brighton seem to be preparing attentively for Baleba’s exit. Players like Diego Gomez, an £11 million acquisition from Inter Miami, and 19-year-old Malick Yalcouye, who impressed on loan at Sturm Graz, are eyed as possible successors.
Brighton might also send Yalcouye on another loan move next season, with other midfield talents such as Jack Hinshelwood, Matt O’Riley, Mats Wieffer, and Yasin Ayari vying for game time.
While Brighton’s well-laid succession plan could tempt United, historically, transfers involving a price tag set by the south coast club often meet their mark.
