Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of completing a move for Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, presenting what many are calling a ‘bargain’ transfer. According to sources, the Red Devils are advancing well in negotiations, with Martinez having ‘everything ready’ to make the switch.
The summer has been a busy period for United, bolstered by funding from INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, to reinforce Ruben Amorim’s squad despite facing challenges in offloading surplus players. Recent arrivals include Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £62.5 million deal, and Paraguayan prodigy Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno.
United have actively pursued reinforcements in various positions, making determined efforts to secure Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, with a third substantial bid lodged for the Cameroonian international. However, the spotlight has now shifted to the goalkeeper position following a disappointing season from Andre Onana. Fans have voiced their desire for improvement between the sticks, and Martinez appears to be the favoured candidate.
Clarin, Argentina’s leading newspaper (via Sport Witness), claims that Martinez is nearing a move to Old Trafford, with his £21.5 million (€25 million) release clause considered an unmissable opportunity for the English giants. The publication describes the potential move as a ‘qualitative leap’ for the Argentine, as he prepares to join one of the world’s most prestigious clubs.
Ex-United defender Wes Brown, however, cautions fans that replacing Onana is no simple feat. “You can’t just sell someone like that,” he said. “These players cost a fortune, and it’s not like a video game where a single button press does the job. It’s more complex.”
Brown also emphasised the need for patience and support for Onana. “He’s made errors, sure, and the pressure’s been high. But selling him is easier said than done. He needs support to prove he’s still a top-quality goalkeeper.”
As Manchester United gear up for the next season, the club hopes that securing Martinez will fortify the squad, adding much-needed competition in goal and providing a fresh start as they aim for a better campaign.
