Manchester United’s pursuit of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo seems to have hit a snag, as the Bees look poised to block any double exit from their forward line this summer. The Red Devils have been in hot pursuit of Mbeumo, but their hopes appear increasingly threatened by Brentford’s firm stand.
To date, United have bolstered their ranks with the arrivals of Matheus Cunha from Wolves after triggering a £62.5 million release clause, and Diego Leon from Paraguayan outfit Cerro Porteno for £3.3 million. Under the guidance of manager Ruben Amorim, United aim for sweeping squad changes, yet find themselves financially constrained as they attempt to offload the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho.
Mbeumo, who bagged an impressive 20 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season, has reportedly expressed his desire to join the Old Trafford side. However, negotiations have stalled after Brentford rejected two bids, holding out for a fee in excess of £65 million for the Cameroon international.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano remains optimistic, claiming the “deal is on” as discussions continue. Romano recently noted Brentford’s emerging interest in Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson as a potential successor to Mbeumo, though talks of this replacement are still in their infancy.
Complicating matters further, Sky Sports suggest that Tottenham, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest are eyeing Yoane Wissa, Mbeumo’s attacking teammate. Forest’s £20 million bid was rebuffed last week, following January’s rejected £22 million offer. Valuation for the 19-goal striker sits at £50 million, drawing interest from Spurs, keen to reunite him with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, and Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, seeking depth alongside Alexander Isak.
The Bees’ hardline stance indicates they are ‘highly unlikely to sell both Mbeumo and Wissa’, implying an agreement for one may scupper any deal involving the other. The report underscores the tactical risk for Brentford: losing both attackers would strip the club of crucial goals and dynamism, a predicament they are keen to avoid.
While Manchester United fans await developments, Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles, remains cool-headed. “There is significant interest in Bryan, as expected after his remarkable season,” Giles stated. “He is open to staying if a move doesn’t materialise. Negotiations continue, but a future at Brentford remains on the table.”
As the transfer window progresses, the tug-of-war over Mbeumo continues, with Manchester United hoping to press their case while keeping an eye on the potentially shifting sands of Brentford’s resolve.
