Amidst speculation linking Ollie Watkins to Manchester United, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has cautioned the forward against what he deems a ‘backward step’ by urging him to prioritise Champions League football over a move to Old Trafford.
Following the collapse of Manchester United’s pursuit of Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres, as revealed by The Mirror, the Red Devils have turned their attention to Aston Villa’s talisman, Watkins. However, Arsenal’s progression in securing Gyokeres leaves United scrambling for alternatives.
At 29, Watkins has emerged as a prime candidate to lead the line under new United manager Ruben Amorim. While talks with Villa have been initiated, disagreements loom over Villa’s £60 million price tag for the English striker.
Previously, United explored the option of a swap deal involving Marcus Rashford, post his loan stint at Villa Park last season. Yet, Villa rejected this offer, opting not to capitalise on what could have been a permanent £40 million acquisition of the England international.
Reports suggest Watkins is contemplating a new chapter, especially after a mid-season dip in form and the increased competition introduced by Rashford’s arrival at Villa.
Yet, ambitions of capitalising on Villa’s potential woes could be dashed by United’s absence from European football next season, a consequence of their defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur in May—a point underscored by Agbonlahor.
“I see Manchester United as a step back,” Agbonlahor emphasised on talkSPORT. “Ollie should aim for a Champions League side, not United. Villa are competing in Europe; they aren’t.”
Highlighting motivation concerns, Agbonlahor added: “A move to United could seem financially driven rather than a footballing decision. At Villa, Watkins relishes abundant opportunities which may not materialise at United. If a move is on the cards, it’s Champions League or nothing.”
Despite his contract with Villa Park running until 2028, and having amassed 16 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season, alongside commendable Champions League and FA Cup contributions, Watkins has not actively sought a departure. It remains to be seen where his ambitions will lead him next.
