Atletico Madrid are reportedly nearing an agreement to meet Tottenham Hotspur’s valuation for defender Cristian Romero, as the Argentine international emerges as a prime target for Diego Simeone’s side.
The Spanish outfit have increased their offer substantially in recent days, according to sources, bringing them closer to meeting Spurs’ financial demands for the central defender. This summer has already seen Tottenham bolster their squad with the signings of Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split, while Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel have joined permanently following successful loan spells at the North London club. However, departures have been minimal, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg transferring to Marseille and both Fraser Forster and Sergio Reguilon leaving on free transfers.
Tottenham’s participation in the upcoming Champions League season despite an underwhelming 17th-place finish in the Premier League last year has put them in a strong position to retain key players. Romero, admired across Europe, has been a subject of significant interest, particularly from Atletico and Real Madrid. Last month, renowned transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano suggested that Spurs were poised to retain Romero for at least another season. He noted, “Atletico Madrid have a genuine admiration for Romero, with Diego Simeone being a notable admirer. Yet, given Tottenham’s Champions League berth and their new project under Thomas Frank, it seems improbable they would part with a leader like Romero at this juncture. Daniel Levy is reportedly resolute on retaining him.”
Nevertheless, Spanish portal Fichajes claims Atletico are determined, with the club’s management aiming to satisfy one of Simeone’s principal ambitions by securing Romero’s services. Reports indicate that Atletico’s latest proposal could reach up to €70 million, comprising a fixed fee of approximately €55 million plus various add-ons to satisfy Spurs’ stipulations. Despite the complexity added by Romero’s contract, which extends until 2027, Atletico remain optimistic. Simeone has persistently engaged with Romero over several months, striving to convince him of a move to the Spanish capital.
The backdrop to these developments includes Romero’s reported displeasure following Tottenham’s decision to part ways with manager Ange Postecoglou after a successful Europa League campaign, with the club now under the stewardship of Thomas Frank.
As the transfer saga unfolds, all eyes will be on whether Atletico can match Tottenham’s steadfast valuation and bring Romero to La Liga.
