Manchester United are reportedly progressing in their efforts to secure Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens as a replacement for Andre Onana, who has found himself out of favour at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian shot-stopper endured a torrid Premier League campaign during 2024/25, attracting heavy criticism after a series of blunders.
With new manager Ruben Amorim rotating between his goalkeeping options, Altay Bayindir took the starting spot in United’s opening fixtures. However, Onana was given an opportunity to redeem himself in the League Cup clash against Grimsby Town. Unfortunately, his calamitous performance contributed to United’s shocking penalty shoot-out exit after the tie ended 2-2.
West Ham United, among other clubs, were presented the opportunity to acquire Onana on loan. However, The Guardian reports that the Hammers have rebuffed such advances as they seek alternative options in the transfer market. This development fuels speculation about United’s intentions to bolster their goalkeeping department, with Caught Offside revealing that an agreement with Lammens is “within reach”.
In an update shared on X, transfer guru Ben Jacobs confirmed that United are keen to finalise a deal for the Belgian before the window closes, despite persistent interest from Turkish outfit Galatasaray.
Meanwhile, former United strikers have weighed in on Onana’s tumultuous spell. Michael Owen suggested other areas might require priority strengthening over the goalkeeper position, while Louis Saha was scathing in his assessment, condemning the “horrific mistakes” witnessed in the defeat to Grimsby.
With the Red Devils’ season at a crossroads and potential incomings on the horizon, the scrutiny on United’s goalkeeping situation shows no signs of diminishing as the transfer deadline approaches.
