In what promises to be a defining chapter in both his career and Arsenal’s recent history, Viktor Gyökeres is stepping into the limelight as the Gunners’ key forward. The Swedish striker, who emerged as Arsenal’s top choice after extensive deliberations over several leading targets, has joined the North London club with high expectations. Andrea Berta was a staunch advocate for Gyökeres, and upon his arrival, the consensus within the club was that his goal-scoring prowess made him an ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Gyökeres arrives at Arsenal on the back of an impressive tally of 39 goals in the Portuguese League last season. His eye-catching form, however, was not enough to secure the coveted European Golden Shoe, as he finished narrowly behind Kylian Mbappé. The French star clinched the title with 31 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga, earning 62 points compared to Gyökeres’ 58.5, due to the differing league coefficients.
Arsenal supporters are hopeful that Gyökeres can end the club’s recent Golden Boot drought in the Premier League, with only one shared victory in the past 12 years – courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2018/19. Before this dry spell, Arsenal were a dominant force in the Golden Boot race, thanks in no small part to greats like Robin van Persie and the legendary Thierry Henry.
This season, Gyökeres will be up against formidable competition, including Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, and Mohamed Salah. There are also new challenges posed by emerging talents like Benjamin Šeško, who is reportedly on the radar of both Manchester United and Newcastle United, and Joao Pedro, who has impressed during Chelsea’s pre-season.
The benchmark for claiming the Premier League Golden Boot has been rising, with the average winning tally reaching 30.7 goals over the past three seasons. If Gyökeres aspires to spearhead Arsenal’s attacking ambitions and etch his name amongst the division’s elite scorers, he may need to surpass this mark once more.
