In a season filled with twists and turns, former Arsenal stalwart Paul Merson has cast doubts on the club’s Premier League title aspirations, pinpointing new signing Viktor Gyokeres as a possible chink in their armour. The Swede arrived at the Emirates in a £63.5 million transfer from Sporting CP during the summer window, bringing hope for a much-needed boost in attack.
Gyokeres was in the starting eleven yet again as Arsenal triumphed over Bournemouth with a hard-fought 3-2 victory, thanks to a Declan Rice brace and a strike from Gabriel Magalhaes. This win sees Arsenal perched six points clear at the top, with Aston Villa trailing in second. However, Manchester City, currently third, could close the gap to four points if they succeed in their upcoming clash with Chelsea.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson voiced concerns over Arsenal’s attacking prowess: “Up front, I don’t think Arsenal have a natural goalscorer. Gyokeres has come in but hasn’t proven to be that player.” The Swede’s tally of five goals in 18 league appearances is evidently a sticking point for Merson, who believes a natural finisher is crucial, especially as the season approaches its climax.
Illustrating his point, Merson added: “In those final eight nerve-wracking games, you need something out of nothing. I think Gabriel Jesus is the closet they have to that natural finisher, but he, along with Gyokeres, may fall behind Kai Havertz when he returns.”
However, in a counterargument that could evoke hope in the hearts of Gunners’ supporters, midfielder Declan Rice heaped praise on Gyokeres, portraying him as vital to Arsenal’s ambitions. After the Bournemouth match, Rice remarked on his teammate’s significance: “It’s tough for him, facing constant defensive pressure, but his strength and contribution are pivotal. Without his movement and presence, my first goal wouldn’t have happened.”
Rice continued to sing Gyokeres’ praises: “When the space comes, and the ball is at his feet, he will score. He is one of the best in the world at what he does. Trust me, we wouldn’t be where we are without him.”
While discussions on whether Gyokeres can deliver as expected persist, his future performances will undoubtedly be watched with a keen eye as Arsenal push for sterling success at the pinnacle of English football.
