Manchester United are reportedly gearing up for a £60 million bid for Everton’s promising centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, aiming to bolster their defensive line in the upcoming January transfer window. This anticipated move comes in the wake of a summer spree where the Red Devils splashed over £200 million on notable signings including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Diego Leon, and Senne Lammens.
Despite these substantial summer acquisitions, United’s start to the season has been less than stellar. A crucial 2-1 victory over Chelsea last weekend was a much-needed reprieve for manager Ruben Amorim, who has been under increasing pressure following a lacklustre beginning to the campaign. United currently find themselves in the lower half of the Premier League table, having garnered a mere seven points from five matches.
In light of these challenges, Amorim and United’s recruitment team are eager to provide the Portuguese manager with additional resources during the winter window, as they strive to transform United’s season trajectory. Branthwaite, who has been on United’s radar for the past couple of years, is now a prime target, with journalist Mark Brus indicating that sources expect a formal £60 million bid.
Amidst uncertainty surrounding the future of Harry Maguire, who remains a pivotal presence at Old Trafford with over 250 appearances, the interest in Branthwaite appears genuine. Maguire is still valued internally as a leader, but his future will soon be a matter of discussion, particularly as he continues to play a key role in mentoring young talent at the club.
Conversely, it appears that Andre Onana’s tenure at United is nearing its conclusion. Renowned transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has suggested that the relationship between Onana and the club is effectively over, with a departure likely before next summer. United are placing their trust in Senne Lammens as the long-term solution between the sticks.
United also remain on the lookout for a quality defensive midfielder to reinforce their squad in future windows, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba identified as a potential acquisition. While Baleba’s recent display against Tottenham was subpar, speculation regarding a Man United move may have affected his performance. Baleba, though respectful of his current club, was keen on the move, yet a deal between Brighton and United did not materialise. Romano asserts that United’s interest in Baleba endures as Amorim holds him in high regard.
The coming months will be critical for Manchester United as they seek to realign their season ambitions and secure top talent to complement their current squad.
