In the latest sagas of the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have rejected an approach from Serie A side Roma for the services of Romanian defender Radu Dragusin, as reported by Sky Sports. Despite their recent defensive struggles, Spurs appear determined to retain their defensive depth following a string of injuries.
The North London outfit has faced a challenging period, winning just a single match in their last seven fixtures, whilst conceding 11 goals. Much of this run featured their first-choice centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, whose performances have fallen short of their usual imperious standards.
Tottenham’s defensive resources have been stretched thin this season. Young talent Kota Takai is deemed not yet ready for the top flight, and both Dragusin and Ben Davies have been sidelined with prolonged injuries. Davies made his return in mid-November, while Dragusin was welcomed back into first-team contention in late December after nearly a year out. However, since a brief five-minute appearance, the Romanian has watched from the bench as the team battles on without his services.
While Dragusin’s absence from the pitch might imply he no longer figures in the club’s plans, Tottenham’s rejection of Roma’s loan bid suggests otherwise. Spurs seem resolute in their decision to hold onto Dragusin for now, though former scout Bryan King anticipates a potential summer departure. The return of Luka Vuskovic, currently turning heads on loan at Hamburg, could influence this scenario.
King commented: “Vuskovic would prefer to ply his trade at Tottenham rather than Hamburg, no doubt about it. He’s shown himself to be a fans’ favourite there and is keen not to let them down. The staff at Spurs are undoubtedly pleased with his progress in Germany, eyeing him as a first-team contender.”
He continued, “You’d want him back if he’s developing as expected. Vuskovic will be a significant asset next season, and they might consider moving Dragusin on to make space.”
Alongside the speculation surrounding Dragusin’s future, Tottenham continues to wrestle with internal and external challenges, including potential managerial changes and player motivations, keeping fans on tenterhooks as the January window unfolds.
