Tottenham Hotspur are actively pursuing the acquisition of a new attacking midfielder this summer following the unfortunate knee injury sustained by James Maddison. The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during the latter stages of the pre-season draw against Newcastle United, and the club has subsequently confirmed that Maddison will require surgery to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
Adding to Tottenham’s woes is the recent announcement of Son Heung-min’s transfer to LAFC, removing another key component from last season’s attacking lineup. With Dejan Kulusevski also sidelined for the early part of the season due to a knee injury, manager Thomas Frank finds himself in urgent need of creative reinforcements for his squad.
Following a significant defeat to Bayern Munich, Frank admitted during a press conference, “We are definitely in the market in general. Of course, when players get a long-term injury, we need to address that, but generally, we are active in the market.”
Among those linked to the North London club are Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss, Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, and, until recently, Enzo Millot from Stuttgart; Millot has since moved to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli.
Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace has also emerged as another potential target for Spurs, with expectations at Selhurst Park of an approach from Tottenham, especially as Arsenal appear focused on player exits. However, with Eze’s release clause, previously below £70 million, having expired last weekend, Spurs might face a steep asking price.
A newly surfaced alternative to the England international comes in the form of AS Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche. French journalist Sebastien Vidal reports that Tottenham are closely monitoring the 23-year-old Frenchman. Although no formal offer has been made, Akliouche is said to be a firm candidate on the club’s transfer radar.
With his versatility allowing him to operate out wide, combined with 15 goals contributed in Ligue 1 and an additional four in the Champions League last season, Akliouche presents an attractive proposition for Frank’s tactical aspirations.
